ITI Presents...
Impro for Life
5 Days with Keith Johnstone with special emphasis on The Life Game.
March 20 to 24, 2000
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP - KEITH WRITES
This five day workshop will be an introduction to my ideas, including
Storytelling, Status Transactions, exercises in spontaneity, and so
forth, but there'll be an emphasis on the skills needed to play The
Life Game©.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
This workshop is designed for performers and non-performers alike. It
is intended for those who want to develop their improvisation skills
with a Master - Keith Johnstone and be in a natural environment, The
Canadian Rocky Mountains.
THE TEACHER
Keith Johnstone will be the principle instructor for this workshop.
He is the originator of many universally practiced forms of
improvisation and is arguably the leading theorist in the field. His
books Impro (Methuen) and Impro for Storytellers (Faber and Faber),
are continuously in print and he has recently given workshops in
America, Austria, Australia, Denmark, England, Germany, Hong Kong,
Japan, and Sweden.
"If teachers were honoured in the British Theatre along with directors, designers, and playwrights, Keith Johnstone would be as familiar a name as those other young talents who were drawn to the great lodestone of the Royal Court Theatre in the late 1950's." Irving Wardle
LOCATION
Just 45 minutes from the centre of Calgary, the workshop will be held
in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains at Nakoda Lodge.

Extracts from reviews of The Life Game
As Lifegame's devisor Keith Johnstone says in the programme, 'If
theatre did not exist perhaps this would be a good place to start if
we wanted to invent it from scratch'. Life game's format engenders
dizzying leaps between confession, memoir, impromptu acting and
comedic improvisation. In trying to communicate it you'd be hard
pressed to avoid.....clichés like redefining theatre and pushing back
the boundaries of performance....
The Independent 28 June 98
"Johnstone has invented a number of theatre-game formats, one of
which, the Life Game, combines theatre's depth and poignancy with the
improvisers' here-and-now creativity. The format is clear, simple,
and open to endless permutation.
The Times 19 June 98
Lifegame is ..... invented by the impro guru Keith Johnstone. Last
night the guest was Joanna Lumney in what, after a wobbly start,
turned out to be a wonderfully intimate, funny and inventive evening.
The Daily Telegraph 26 June 98
I thought it was exactly the kind of thing I'd pay money not to have
to go and see. Yet, to my surprise, it works, and although is could
easily be banal, I imagine that in most circumstances it is more
likely to be truly fantastic theatre - spontaneous, unique,
universal, and mythological.
The Guardian 1 April 98
The premise is brilliantly simple.....The last decade or so has led
us to consider improvisation.......as the stuff of comedy
performances, rather than as a potential direct vein of serious
theatre material. Improbable is working wonders to eradicate this
fallacy.
