Climbing in the Red River Gorge

Over the weekend of October 2-4, 1998 I went with a group of people from the Purdue Outing Club to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky.

The Red is only about a five hour drive from Lafayette so we left Friday night and arrived just in time to lay our sleeping bags out in the dark and go to sleep. In the morning, we got up just in time to put our sleeping bags away before it started raining. We went a large overhang and spent some time staring at the greenness of the place and doing a little bouldering, until we decided that it wasn't going to stop raining. So we drove the half-hour back to Lexington and spent the day at Climb Time, an indoor climbing gym.

That night we had dinner at Miguel's--a pizza place that's the unofficial headquarters for climbing in the Red.

It rained all night, but when we got up Sunday morning the rain stopped. We decided to seize the day and went to the Left Flank. Everything was still very wet, but we tackled Brother Stair and Mr. Bungle.

Assorted pictures from the climbs:

Scott attacking Mr. Bungle
Action belaying!
Megan conquering Mr. Bungle
A rock formation
The ubiquitous climbing butt shot
A wall
Iron ore
