From what I understand, the idea behind Team Human came from a joke between authors Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan: with all the talk of Team Jacob and Team Edward amongst Twilight fans, why wasn’t anyone on Team Human. As I tend, in these things, to be much more on Team Buffy, I think that’s a great idea. When that joke got turned into a book, though, and the authors started to deal with some of the mechanics of how, exactly, our high schoolers would know there was a vampire in their midst and who was falling in love with one, we end up with something that looks, to my eye, a lot more like a standard teen paranormal romance. Not so much my cup of tea.
