First ride to work of the year

first ride of 2007

These numbers are not that impressive (except for that Max Speed -- the Geko glitches like that every now and then), but it's my first ride of the year, and so I share so that it will be more impressive when I get my speed up in a few weeks.

I have this crazy idea to run a Marathon this year. I'm not sure why -- I don't really like running. But it seems like a such a iconic "life achievement" that I kind of feel like checking it off. Annnd, the Nike + iPod kit could make it all a giant numbers game, which I do totally love (see the photo above).

That looks like excellent time to me. But I move slow. I'm wondering if there was much bike traffic.

There was almost no one on the path at all. Shaun said that the lake front was incredibly crowded this weekend, so I was expecting more people, but there weren't many.

Marathon running will definitely make you geek on numbers. Mile times. Half mile times. Last time I ran without any real training or goals; I don't suggest this method. I'm thinking of running another one just to achieve certain arbitrary goals. We'll see if that happens.

26.2 miles is a loooong way, but once it's over, it doesn't seem so bad. You'll be happy you did it. So will your beer gut ;). And think of all those numbers you'll get to post: HH:MM:SS! Mile splits! Half-marathon split! Sigh.

I've run two now. I can tell you that running Chicago three years ago was one of the best things I've ever done. (LA this year was cool, but not quite the same sort of peak life experience.)

The two things I think my running buddies and I did right were careful preparation, and the fact that we made a commitment to running together once a week. The two of us that held to that did the best, and had the best time.

Hal Higdon's program works great. Good luck!

I am more of a biker too, and don't really like running either. Just got my bike back from the shop, and I plan to make Al Gore proud and start biking into work next week or so.

That being said, my running goal for the year is a measly 10 miles... or a half marathon if I get overly agressive. I'm doing a few of the organized runs downtown this year and have been training up. Lemme know if you are interested or want to run together. Oh, and I hear good things about Hal Higdon's program too. ;)
